Its hard to know what to say about this. The leaves are constructed of Poplar and pigmented epoxy, the jeans are real, and yes, that's a flourescent tube projecting from the center.
I wish I could tell you exactly what the inspiration for this piece was, but I don't quite know myself. The idea came to me complete and out of the blue. I can say why I thought it a worthy idea to pursue. I love the way the pants seem to have stopped suddenly, and remained frozen long enough to be overgrown by some otherworldly electrified plant. It hints at mystery and a sense of long passages of time. There is both a animated quality to the giant growth and one of petrifaction. Clearly the result of some neon-flora-medusa effect.
From a technical standpoint, I am extremely pleased with the filled-kerf technique that both gives the leaves their natural shape and provides veining. I am always looking for repetitive machine techniques that yeild identifiable organic forms. It makes perfect sense that a leaf's veins are integral to its shape, but insights of this type are often difficult to translate to power tools.
